This book is one of the more fascinating and recent books written by a man who worked for the CIA for over thirty years. This is one of the better-written and enjoyable memoirs I have read in recently years.One of the most enjoyable aspects of this book I show the author writes about history and on-going events in addition to his perspective. He may write that he was working in Asia but changes in politics back home affected his work. It shows how vastly important communications remain as part of the organization’s mission.There are plenty of very serious moments in the book where the author is clearly dealing with life and death situations. Such as the time he was sent to Africa to visit a source of information at a time when the nation was crumbling in revolt. He took a Russian army truck, full of Russian soldiers, to the city to meet that contact.I also enjoyed his comments on various directors and presidents. In many cases, his comments were in line with my thoughts regarding the personalities involved.There are many other examples of how he worked sensitive case provided within this book. However, seldom is it possible to know the details. Like other memoirs of the CIA, the book has been swept clean of any information that could cause problems for sources (spies) or worse…the possibility of execution. Make no doubt about it: The author dealt with real life and death situations.In one of the more interesting and brief moments in the book the author says it takes about four years to train a CIA officer for an overseas position.From what I can gather, that includes a lot of language training and skills. Lots of very interesting skills. Sometimes taught by outsiders. Sometimes by in house experts. With all such training: The learning starts when you are actually deployed. But it takes years and thousands of hours of training and education to make a spy.I also enjoyed the author’s sense of humor. He apparently enjoyed a good laugh and occasionally found it. One of my favorites was the time he was drinking beer with a kangaroo in Australia. Alternatively, how someone left a memo on his desk suggesting the theft of art from the ambassador’s residence. As he read this memo, he looked up at his office wall and found someone had placed the artwork…on his wall. It was a prank!The author spent the last few years of his time with the CIA as a college professor teaching the history of his art. This is fascinating igiven the history of the CIA in universities. The benefit to you as a reader is the book contains a very large list of suggesting readings on the topic of espionage. The author recommends no less than forty books worth the effort of reading.If you enjoyed this book then I would recommend the following reads: Disciples: The World War Two Missions of the CIA Directors who fought for Bill Donavon by Douglas Waller, Next stop execution by Oleg Gordiesbky, The craft we choose by Richard Holmes and Jawbreaker by Gary Bersten.
